thats a big question to get into. There’s a few models that I think represent good value. from there its really about the specifics of buying a used car.
You still have the LC rig for a backup camper? I remember following along the build for that and it looked like a pretty sweet rig. Definitely got me thinking about a different approach to car camping. Now you got me rethinking things again. Curse ye! ;)
Hey Foster, long time fan from way back during peak ACL days. Can't tell you how stoked I am to follow you along this journey (especially the outdoors - surfing).
I’m getting 11-12. Which sounds terrible but it’s 2-3 mpg better than I got with my Tacoma flat bed. I could get her better mpg if I went to bigger tires but that would add increased wear and tear on my drive train.
Where do you keep damp wetsuits to best dry them out quick ? Traveling out my car a bit this summer and don't really want to be sleeping with the smell inside
For reasons I would understand why you didn't show gun storage, but do you have any holders instead of cases that keep the gun from getting damaged or rubbed to death?
The difference you talk about between wet and dry heat has nothing to do with the fuel in my experience. It has to do with where the combustion is taking place. An open face propane heater where you can see the flame burning, will cause condensation. Wheres a propex style propane heater where the combustion takes place in a separate chamber with it's own air intake and exhaust ports vented to the outside (like your diesel heater does also) will produce a dryer heat and actually remove moisture from the heated area. Allowing you to de-fog windows and dry clothes. Sick Set up tho! Nothing like a big truck!
my propane heater in the old FWC didn’t seem to do as good of a job drying stuff out. theres definitely a lot of condensation when propane goes from liquid to gas. I’ll do some digging. I defiantly love a full-sized truck for anything more than a canopy.
Interesting to hear the thoughts against having a flatbed 4WC on a flatbed to make room for external storage. The flatbed 4WC's have the cute little dinette in the rear since they have the side door like a Sunrader. How much did you get your Hawk for? I have a slightly high-rise camper shell and am looking for an Eagle for my 01 Tundra AC up in Seattle :)
I had a fleet flatbed from 2014-2016 and used that dinette maybe twice. I personally value having more external storage than internal living space. It just suits my style of travel more. some people might like having a dinette and larger cooking space more but if im going to be hanging out in the camper id like to be on the couch or laying down. I got my hawk shell for the low teens.
Good insights, I just got back from a camping trip in Tasmania where we rented a van and the best part is cooking/eating/existing outside anyway. Not a bad price, there is an Eagle in Bend going for a bit too much, but I am keeping an eye on it, would look real good on my truck.
Thank you, learning from you about what I want to do to my pickup. Have a good one!
love it

im working on it!
favorite cooking gear? you ever use something like a blackstone?
I’m going to do a break down on this at some point. I have tried tons of different combos and settled a system I like a lot.
For someone less familiar with vehicles…What do you look for in a used truck that you want to convert to a camper?

I sold the 80 a year ago. Now the fords my only 4wd
Hope it went to good home. I remember when you first put it up for sale. I was tempted, but overseas at the time. Long May the Ford Ride!
This is really cool post. I will never do anything like this, but I enjoyed reading about it. Thanks.
never say never

thanks for stopping by.
What kind of mpg are you averaging?

I keep mine in my lockable boxes and then air them out when I’m sleeping for the night.
Might try leave mine between boards and roof racks

I like to carry guns and camera gear in pelican cases.

I have had two FWC and think they are a really a good solution when you take into consideration weight, size, durability and ongoing support from FWC.
